Seeing our ‘why’ come to life

With the end of our first full financial year, it’s time for some reflection. With a company called Purpose at Work it’s no surprise that what we do has to serve our ‘why’.

This year we guided several organisations through their self-organising teams pilot. The project evaluations were a treasure trove of learnings and insights. And a true test of how well we are achieving our purpose!

We just have to look at the comments from the self-organising teams we have supported to be reminded of our ‘Why’. Seeing people have the kinds of experiences as expressed in the quotes below gives our work meaning:

“I think it improved the service because we had ten heads working together, rather than relying on one person to come up with the answers. And I think it opened up the option to ask for help whereas sometimes when working independently you don’t always feel comfortable asking for help. We could ask … to achieve the best quality we can.”

“As a person, I felt like I fitted into that philosophy quite well because I like to work really cooperatively. I had stepped out from managing a team. I enjoyed the concept of changing it from a management perspective to a cooperative model. Working alongside people rather than being the one that always had to find the solution. I really enjoyed joint problem solving and having a structure to scaffold that. I really enjoy the cooperative people stuff in tandem with the structured stuff.”

“It added to the quality of service, it gave us the sense of ownership of the project. Because I created the guidelines around it, I felt comfortable working toward those goals, as opposed to when someone tells us how to do it then feel less like taking on the ownership as much and see the success.”

“I think the self-organising team concept is fantastic as you will get more buy in from the quieter individuals and work more cohesively as a team. Also empowers them with the ability to be a part of a team making decisions and potentially increase productivity.”
